Entertainment Industry Question 3: What is the best way to make a cold call to get work?

Jessica's Answer:

For all of you who hate making cold calls, you're going to love my answer to this one: DON'T MAKE THEM!  I know in some industries cold calling is the norm, but ours is a creative industry, so it's not.  The reason is because people want to hire people they know, like, and trust.  Money, jobs, and reputations are on the line.

Put yourself in the shoes of the person doing the hiring.  If you had to hire someone on a $50 million feature and your job and reputation was on the line, would you hire a cold caller or someone you've worked with for 10 years?  Even if your entire network of people was unavailable, would you hire a cold caller or ask your network for recommendations to other people?  Cold calling is a long shot.  I'm not saying that people have never gotten jobs making them, I'm saying it's working hard, not smart or right.

I'll answer the obvious next question tomorrow: if I shouldn't cold call people, how do I meet them?

If you have a question, put it in the comment section.

Entertainment Industry Question 2: What is the purpose of doing a set visit?

Jessica's Answer:

There are many reasons to visit a movie, television, or commercial set.  To name a few:

1. As a professional, who could be called to work on that set one day, you want to assess the atmosphere so when you show up to work, you fit right into the mix.  It will make it a smoother transition for everyone when you already have a sense of the workplace.

2. There is an energy about being on set that can be very inspirational.  Stay for a while to soak up that energy that comes from creative people doing what they do best.

3. It's a great place to meet new like-minded people because you've been invited by someone who will introduce you to the people they know you'll connect with.

4. If your union has an "available list," it's your job to let other members know who you are so when they call for the list they see a familiar name.  It makes their job easier when they recognize the names on that list.

5. Ever heard the expression: Being in the right place at the right time?  Put yourself in the right place, and it will become the right time.  If someone working on set gets a call for work and they're already at work, they may turn to you and ask if you'd like the job.  (This has happened to quite a few of my clients.)

Entertainment Industry Question 1: How do I generate Union work without Union contacts?

Jessica's Answer:

In general- you don't.  If you want to work union jobs, it's imperative that you have relationships with people who hire union members.  I have clients who have been working non-union for over 20 years.  When I look at their list of contacts, everyone they know is non-union.

The good news is, at least you know what's missing.  Create a target list of people who can hire you for the types of union jobs you want. Don't concern yourself with "how" you're going to meet them.  At this point, just become aware of who they are. Then when you have a question about how you're going to get to them, come on back and post your question in the comments.

Wild

At my yoga studio, there is a March 30/30/30 challenge; 30 days, 30 classes, get 30% off your next package. My mom and I do it every year, but my dad had this fear around yoga. His flexibility is not what it used to be so perhaps he had a fear of failure or a fear of being judged. Maybe it was a fear of injury or that it wouldn’t work for him. I can guess all day long, but instead, I will share with you that my dad decided to push through his fears. He started a few days later than my mom and I, so he’s been doing doubles. NOW he is ahead of me AND he’s revolving his whole calendar around yoga classes. I’m so happy for him because he gets better each day and it’s so good for him. My dad is both literally and mentally stretching. Today’s article is on pushing through fear.

WILD; How to overcome your fears

Wild is based on the true story of Cheryl Strayed, who accomplished a 1,100-mile solo hike. As with all true stories, you can learn a lot from Cheryl’s mistakes. She didn’t take the time to research her trail. She didn’t pack and lift her pack until the morning she was to leave. However, there’s a great quote that says, “She thought she could so she did.”

Fears generally come from the unknown; I’m afraid to talk to a stranger at an event because I don’t know what to say. I’m afraid I won’t make it in this industry because other people are great at the business and I’m not. I’m afraid to do everything I can because if I don’t give my whole heart and soul then I can’t really fail, because I never actually tried.

I have solutions for all three of these fears as well as the many others I know exist. Add a comment

Good Will Hunting

Since 2002, I have worked with coaches for training in skills, marketing, running a business, speaking, etc. In February, I was immersed in learning at a 3-day bootcamp and 2-day mastermind with my coach/mentor. Even though I’ve attended his bootcamps over 10 times through the years, I continue to go back because I always learn new strategies and I’m also reminded of strategies I’ve stopped implementing that worked.  My coach is obsessed with basketball. He has his own court in his backyard and when you go to his house he makes you shoot free throws.  In honor of all the homestudy programs I’ve invested in from him through the years, which I listen to over and over again in my car, I am throwing a March Madness Sale. I am sharing it with you FIRST because I want you to be a part of it because I’m on a mission to help as many people as I can feel confident in the tools they have to fulfill their entertainment industry dreams! You can keep reading or skip to today's article, Good Will Hunting, Why You Get Stuck.

THE SWITCH

PLAN B

Kassie Larson’s Plan A was to get married and have kids, but when she found herself in her thirties, single, having not found love yet, she decided it was necessary to form a Plan B. Her Plan B was to find a sperm donor, be artificially inseminated and raise her baby on her own.

Plan A is fulfilling work in the entertainment industry, that’s your passion, that’s why you read my newsletter. I get that. Work slowdowns or long periods of no work are to be expected in the entertainment industry, I hope you plan for them. However, it’s the unexpected like the death of a spouse, a sudden major illness, taking on the responsibility of an aging parent, a child with special needs that can be draining on your bank account affecting your ability to pursue your Plan A. That’s why a Plan B residual income stream is so important in life.

Now you may be thinking, “Jessica, I’m already too busy with everything I’m doing right now and you want me to add something?” Well, yes.  If the unexpected occurs, your life will be turned upside down and your time allocation will have to change drastically!

What I’m suggesting, is if you take a small chunk of your time and invest it in a Plan B residual income NOW, this way, when the unexpected occurs, the change won’t have to be so drastic, because you’ll have a residual income to give you peace of mind in the financial department.

Now you may be wondering, “How do I make residual income? How much of my time will it take? How do I balance it with my entertainment career?” There are many ways to make residual income that can fit in with your Plan A. Here are six:    Add a comment

Vision Quest

A Simple Way to Keep Your Eye on Your Goal

High school wrestler, Louden Swain sets a goal for himself that no one thinks he can achieve. His friends call it his vision quest. While few believe in him, he never takes his eye of his goal.

In my last article, I wrote that you get what you focus on. So, what are you looking at? What we see affects our mental well being as well as our physical.  Yes, like “you are what you eat,” what you see affects how you feel.  Therefore, it would be great for you to create a vision board, to look at often, of everything you want.

Creating a vision board used to be extremely time consuming because you knew what you wanted, but had to look through piles of magazines to find it or something that came close. It was messy with all the cutting and pasting, but still fun.

Today I’m going to share a few tips that are easy on you and kind to the environment. It won’t take you long to create something inspirational!  Here’s how you do it:

The Karate Kid

Catching a Fly With Chopsticks

Upon seeing Mr. Miyagi attempting to catch a fly with chopsticks, Daniel gives it a try. That’s a description I found on the Internet. “Try” isn’t a word that I’m particularly fond of using in regards to going after a dream. It’s non-committal. If there is one thing we learned about Daniel in The Karate Kid, he was committed. Even when he was frustrated because he didn’t understand the tasks Mr. Miyagi was giving him, he did them. Including focusing all of his attention on catching that fly.   If you get what you focus on, then you want to focus on what you want. Many people in the entertainment industry know what they want in a big picture way like: “I want to be famous,” “I want to work on Oscar winning projects,” “I want to make millions of dollars.” These wants are in alignment with what’s possible in this industry, however, when I ask how they plan to achieve these “big picture dreams” 90% of people say either that they don’t know or that they plan to keep getting work until it happens.

Those answers are not focused answers. If you ask a budding CEO of a breakthrough product what his dream is and he says that it’s to make millions with his product, and then you ask him how he plans to do that, he will whip out a business plan that he designed in Harvard Business School, and it will be quite impressive.

Do you have a business plan for 2015? If so, how focused is it? I’d like to give you some pointers:

Elf

Spreading Holiday Cheer

In Elf, Will Ferrell, has a childlike innocence, that not only makes him fearless, he also embraces strangers in the hopes of making their day better and their Christmas brighter.

Have you ever stood in an elevator next to someone and not said a word?  Have you ever stood on line for groceries with a person in front of you and behind you and not exchanged a smile? Have you ever been on a boat and noticed that it doesn’t matter if you’re on a yacht or a dingy people wave at each other?

Well, we don’t all live on boats, we live on this planet together, amongst billions of strangers, and most of the time, we don’t embrace our fellow humans.

Why is that? I’m the rare breed who does say hello to people in elevators as well as strike up a conversation with whomever is on line with me at a store.  And this month, I took it a step further and it’s helped me grow my business. I’m going to teach you exactly what to do, even give you a quick script so you can create opportunities every time you leave the house.  Here’s the script:
